Training Spotlight

Simulation Training with Sentara Obici Hospital Ambulatory Surgery Center & VCU Department of Nurse Anesthesia

Training Spotlight

VCU came to work with both our anesthesia team and the site team to provide simulation training in September. They are a strong market partner for us in the recruitment pipeline–VCU custom-built and provided this training on location, at no cost, on the merit of our relationship. The training provided invaluable learning for all teams for medical simulations that are often less encountered, and increased team building and communication.

The purpose of this simulation training program is to develop effective and reliable performance among NAPA team members under high levels of workload and stress using a multi-modal educational approach. This educational program incorporates lecture, observation, and hands-on high-fidelity simulation training and debriefing. It aims to convey knowledge of the stress environment, emphasize skill development, and build confidence in the ability to perform under high stress and critical circumstances.

The program highlights the essential characteristics of well-coordinated teams, which include: 1) the ability to adapt to a changing environment, 2) open and flexible communication, and 3) awareness and understanding of other team members' workload and performance.

Upon completion of the program, learners are able to: 1) identify when a situation becomes critical, 2) understand the negative impact of stress on performance, 3) communicate more effectively under high-stress conditions, and 4) work more effectively as part of a team managing a critical event.

NAPA Integration

NAPA Integration

Dear Colleagues,

It has been six months since our two organizations came together and there has already been an immense amount of work across the organization as part of the integration process. Our guiding principle throughout this process has been to provide best-in-class support to you, our clinicians, to achieve our quality and patient-service goals.

You may have already seen some of our work in this area, such as the launch of NAPA Direct. There is more to come, and we will keep you updated with the additional work that is underway, through our monthly townhalls as well as emails.

The October townhall, which was held on October 22, focused on how we are doing as a combined organization. A key value for NAPA is transparency, and we use these forums to provide insight into the broader organization, the decisions we are making and how we are tracking. The town halls alsogive you an opportunity to ask the Executive Team questions. If you are able, I strongly encourage you to join the townhalls. These are great events, and you won't be disappointed.

Finally, I want to thank you all again for your continued work and commitment through what continue to be challenging times. Throughout the pandemic, you have tirelessly remained on the frontlines, and I want to reiterate how proud I am of your selflessness and hard work in the field.

Stay safe,

John F. Di Capua, MD
